In the footsteps of the Etruscans


I like to draw your attention to Pitigliano. Originally Etruscan, who already had a settlement here in the 6th century. Located on a high volcanic rockchain in the Maremma region, the southwestern part of Tuscany in the province of Grosseto. Today there are about 4000 people living in this town with the striking bell tower. The town covers an area of approximately 102 km2.


Pitigliano flourished in the 13th century and has a rich history. With well-known family names. It is the place where the Orsinis, a papal family from Rome, ruled Pitigliano from the year 1293. 


Pitigliano has not yet been discovered by mass tourism! What a pleasure it is to stroll through the narrow streets and over the majestic squares of this town.

Walk through the Jewish neighborhood and enjoy the many vistas. I wanted to photograph almost every street and then I don't say anything about the views I found there. I can show this all to you in this book!


Especially in this area you do not get bored of what you come across. Such as the town of Sovana, which consists of only a few streets and has around 400 inhabitants. Already in the third century BC the Romans gave this town, which is more a hamlet, this name. The town's name is derived from the Etruscan ‘Suf’ which means ‘green earth’.

Ik wil u attenderen op Pitigliano. Van oorsprong Etruskisch, die hier in de 6e eeuw al een nederzetting hadden. Gelegen op een 313 meter hoge, vulkanische rotsketen in de Maremma streek, het zuidwestelijke deel van de regio Toscane in de provincie Grosseto. Thans wonen in dit stadje met de opvallende, in het oog springende klokkentoren, zo’n 4000 mensen op een gebied van circa 102 km2. 


Bekende en roemruchte families

Pitigliano kwam pas in de 13e eeuw tot bloei en kent een rijke geschiedenis die ver teruggaat in onze jaartelling. Met bekende familienamen. Het is de plek waar de Orsini’s, een pauselijke familie uit Rome, Pitigliano vanaf 1293 bestuurden.


Langs pleinen en door nauwe straatjes

Pitigliano is nog niet door het massatoerisme ontdekt en gelukkig maar! 

Wat is het een genot om door de soms nauwe straatjes en over de pleinen van dit stadje te slenteren. 


De groene aarde van Sovana

Vooral in de omgeving raak je niet uitgekeken op wat je allemaal tegenkomt. Zoals het stadje Sovana dat slechts uit enkele straatjes bestaat en slechts zo’n 400 inwoners telt. Al in de derde eeuw voor Christus gaven de Romeinen het stadje, wat meer een gehucht is, deze naam. De naam van het stadje is afgeleid van het Etruskische ‘Suf’ wat ‘groene aarde’ betekent.
